Like the reference Shangri-La (whφλich I’ll call the ‘Senior’), t​∞✔€he Junior uses an ultra-thin, very lo←≥w mass diaphragm suspended between t"δ£×wo oppositely charged stators that ÷Ω​are rapidly charged and>β £ discharged to move the diaphragm baπ±‌$ck and forth, produc€☆δing remarkably coherent sound ₹∑ ∏that only a single driver system can prβ≈§<ovide. While a lot of the technoα♦logy in the Junior headphone u★ σnit is similar to the reference > λ©Senior, it uses a smaller driv>¶<er or diaphragm. According to ♥γdesigner Dr. Fang Bian, HiFiM♠​'πAN’s Founder and CEO, the JuniαΩ¶•or’s smaller circular-shaped dr≈ iver is actually a bit faste☆☆δ€r than the Senior’s larger≠±≥ oval-shaped one. The nano-partic®≈↑le coating on both ultra-≤σ₽↑thin (less than 0.001mm'©) diaphragms is very evenl→☆♠y distributed to avoi♠→σd hot spots, and the ♦¶stators share similar materε↑​ials. Both use sophisticated micro-me∏£≥sh wire stators working in close proxiπ↕πmity to the diaphragm to increase o★φ↓penness and minimize distortion while aσ∑≈÷llowing extended frequ≈↔∑ency response from 7Hz t£±★Ωo 120kHz. Itβ∞σs input stage, using↔✔ four matched 6SN7N valves, produ©→≠ces a wide soundstage and music☆"♦ality in spades. Theδ∏ Junior amp is a hybrid, matinλ​g a Class A output stσ ™£age with the valve i  "Ωnput stage. Via the Junior, Nat’s clear ★↓αdiction and impeccable phrasing h×♥§elp to draw one into the music and↓≤÷φ performance. Female voices like Sara→≤§& Vaughn’s on Ballads ↑ε[Roulette Jazz] or Julie London’s on∑♦§₹ Cry Me A River[Libe¶✔rty Records] are seductive a< nd mesmerizing, and massed£β voices on Reference Recordings’¶φ​☆ wonderful recording of John Rutterδ​γ’s Requiemare close to the best π<I’ve heard outside of the concert hall↓✔♥♦. They’re spread across a ↑£∏wide and deep sound stage, t☆£•©he sound is rich and full-bodied×λ→♦, and one can clearly hear th ≈→e ambience of the ha$πll.

With its extended fr÷÷↔ equency response and low "≤α¥colouration, the Junior δ‌ is ruthlessly revealing of fl∞σα$aws in source material, cables, andδ₽π≈ associated electronic§≥€×s, and the Junior sounds better with we→ §ll-recorded high-resolution tracksβΩ and LPs. As with many re ±₩​ference components, •≥βthe better the ancillary equα→☆ipment and cables you use the better¥☆≥ the sound will be. My tube-bas✘ λφed Modwright-Oppo player, aided ≥φby a Shunyata Research Alpha power ×≈'≤cable, produced far better results than ™₹ what I heard from the Junior at both C→"€δanJam SoCal and AXPONA. Specifically, t‌ he sound was significantly more ne$α♠¥utral and natural with t±₹€hese better associated component♠±  s and cables than in the trade ✔'®show demos. (I suspect the noisy ho←σtel power at both shows w×'as the culprit).
