While&n¶≤bsp;no-holds-barred systems advance the₹₽λ state of the art, they are o ↔<ut of the reach of most audiophiles and♦$‍& music enthusiasts. What I likλ↑e to find are components that approach α•the state-of-the-art, but are much moreγ★​ affordable, like HiFiMAN’s amazi☆£♣ng Shangri-La Junior e•™lectrostatic headphone s≠<ystem ($8,000 US, £7↓↔π¶,998 UK).

How©↓ever, I find myself coming"÷₹ back to electrostats time and &→‍again because of their trans¥​↑parency, coherence, lightn&∏ing quick and focused transient res‌Ωponse, clarity, and their n ✘Ω$atural-sounding harmoniφ cs.

Like the reference Shangri-La (whφλich I’ll call the ‘Senior’), t​∞✔€he Junior uses an ultra-thin, very lo←≥w mass diaphragm suspended between t"δ£×wo oppositely charged stators that ÷Ω​are rapidly charged and>β £ discharged to move the diaphragm baπ±‌$ck and forth, produc€☆δing remarkably coherent sound ₹∑ ∏that only a single driver system can prβ≈§<ovide. While a lot of the technoα♦logy in the Junior headphone u★ σnit is similar to the reference > λ©Senior, it uses a smaller driv>¶<er or diaphragm. According to ♥γdesigner Dr. Fang Bian, HiFiM♠​'πAN’s Founder and CEO, the JuniαΩ¶•or’s smaller circular-shaped dr≈ iver is actually a bit faste☆☆δ€r than the Senior’s larger≠±≥ oval-shaped one. The nano-partic®≈↑le coating on both ultra-≤σ₽↑thin (less than 0.001mm'©) diaphragms is very evenl→☆♠y distributed to avoi♠→σd hot spots, and the ♦¶stators share similar materε↑​ials. Both use sophisticated micro-me∏£≥sh wire stators working in close proxiπ↕πmity to the diaphragm to increase o★φ↓penness and minimize distortion while aσ∑≈÷llowing extended frequ≈↔∑ency response from 7Hz t£±★Ωo 120kHz. Overtones in the hig ∑δ<h frequencies are und$​istorted, enabling voices and instrumσ‍ents to sound more natu€•ral, while deep tones are ext §πβended and controlled. α♥

While certainly no♣←↔‌t portable, the Junior’s amplifier≈®•↓ is easily ‘luggable’ and <∏ fits comfortably on a desk, ta ∑bletop, or nightstand. Itβ∞σs input stage, using↔✔ four matched 6SN7N valves, produ©→≠ces a wide soundstage and music☆"♦ality in spades. Theδ∏ Junior amp is a hybrid, matinλ​g a Class A output stσ ™£age with the valve i  "Ωnput stage. It is able to©↑× drive difficult loads and at the ↓★↔recent AXPONA show, it drove b≥' oth the Shangri-La Senior and φ•×Junior simultaneousl♥✘>₽y via its two five-pin ele∏≤€‍ctrostatic headphone jacks. Some showα£ attendees plugged their Stax headphone§φs into the amp and reported ve¥₽ry good results. The Juniβ"or’s amp (available sep±₩>arately for $5,000 US, or £4,399∞↕ ∏ UK) is worthy of a φ"₩separate review—it’s that π$good!

I↓≈t’s difficult to match>₹ the seamless coherency of the Juni↕€or with any multi-driver transducer—as∏$ is apparent on demanding vocal φ×≤£and piano recordings.

I foβ§>®und myself transported to the ‌γrecording venue and was able to hear a$∞≤•ll kinds of subtle d₹ σ₹etails, typically obscured by other tra¶→¶nsducers, like the na‌σ tural decay of the notes, the ped✔♥aling nuances, and the ™'hammers hitting the string¶→∏s on both classical an÷₹★®d jazz recordings like Vladimir↑&← Ashkenazy performing Rachmaninov:♥±♠ Complete Works for Piano[De&☆↕​cca] and Bill Evans ∞<σδon the brilliant MoFi LP ≠ ¥εreissue of Sundα↔≈•ay at the Village Vangua"‍‍♥rd.

Listening to  →¥an SACD of Nat King Cole sin£∑ ging “Stardust” on Love↕γδ is the Thing[Analog>≥¥γue Productions], I was reminded ofα≠€Ω how silky-smooth his voicπ£βεe was, as well as of its gorgeous₹ε✔ timbre. Via the Junior, Nat’s clear ★↓αdiction and impeccable phrasing h×♥§elp to draw one into the music and↓≤÷φ performance. Female voices like Sara→≤§& Vaughn’s on Ballads ↑ε[Roulette Jazz] or Julie London’s on∑♦§₹ Cry Me A River[Libe¶✔rty Records] are seductive a< nd mesmerizing, and massed£β voices on Reference Recordings’¶φ​☆ wonderful recording of John Rutterδ​γ’s Requiemare close to the best π<I’ve heard outside of the concert hall↓✔♥♦. They’re spread across a ↑£∏wide and deep sound stage, t☆£•©he sound is rich and full-bodied×λ→♦, and one can clearly hear th ≈→e ambience of the ha$πll.

With its extended fr÷÷↔ equency response and low "≤α¥colouration, the Junior δ‌ is ruthlessly revealing of fl∞σα$aws in source material, cables, andδ₽π≈ associated electronic§≥€×s, and the Junior sounds better with we→ §ll-recorded high-resolution tracksβΩ and LPs. As with many re ±₩​ference components, •≥βthe better the ancillary equα→☆ipment and cables you use the better¥☆≥ the sound will be. My tube-bas✘ λφed Modwright-Oppo player, aided ≥φby a Shunyata Research Alpha power ×≈'≤cable, produced far better results than ™₹ what I heard from the Junior at both C→"€δanJam SoCal and AXPONA. Specifically, t‌ he sound was significantly more ne$α♠¥utral and natural with t±₹€hese better associated component♠±  s and cables than in the trade ✔'®show demos. (I suspect the noisy ho←σtel power at both shows w×'as the culprit).

One common criticism of electrostat→>πic transducer designs is their l£$≤ack of bass, but this is not♦₽ true with either of the Shangriλ​₹-La’s. The Junior has extended and wel±​αl-controlled bass and can eve₽₩☆n reproduce the deep §✘pedal tones of a church♥≈÷σ organ on recordings like'"π Reference Recordings’ Sai ♦≥Ωnt-Saens Symphony No.3, the oφ‍rgan symphony. Better sti¶☆∏ll, you don’t have to wo"±rry about over-driving y‌₽πour room reproducing those deep>€× tones! The bass guita∑₹×r on the late great Jaco Pa¥₽Ωstorius’ Word of✘$← Mouthalbum [Warner Bros.] was quite π∏✔satisfying with phenomenal bass ≤↑articulation and zero overhang. Sam &±±Jones’ bass on Somethinπ₩πα’ Else[Analogue Productions’ Blue Note'β≤♥ SACD reissue] sounds like the real t ¥Ω≠hing without the additional bass bloat ☆ Ω÷so often heard on other syste®φ☆≥ms.
